Using a brush with the wrong bristles

When buying your toothbrush, make sure the bristles aren’t too stiff. Stiff bristles can aggravate the gums, which is why softer-bristled brushes are usually recommended. The bristles should be sturdy enough to remove plaque, but gentle enough to do so without causing damage to the teeth.

Not brushing long enough

It is recommended to brush for at least 2 minutes, while 3 minutes is considered the best time to remove all plaque and bacteria and effectively cleanse your teeth. However, most people fall short of the recommended time period, spending less than 2 minutes on their brushing routine. Toothbrushes with built-in timers can be used to help with keeping your toothbrushing going for the optimal amount of time.

Brushing too harshly

A lot of people tend to brush very rigorously, which can damage the tooth enamel over extended periods of time. The correct brushing technique should be used when brushing teeth, using soft circular motions all around the tooth surface, moving the toothbrush vertically across your teeth.

Skipping inner tooth surfaces

The inner tooth surfaces are the parts of your teeth the tongue presses against. These areas are as important to clean as the rest of your teeth, and are commonly forgotten about during the regular brushing routine.

Using the same toothbrush for too long

Most dentists recommend that you should change your toothbrush every three to four months. However, you can tell when your toothbrush needs replacing by looking at the condition of it’s bristles – when they lose flexibility and start fraying, it is best to get a new brush.
